Robert Carl Demler, Jr.

Robert Demler and his wife, Leslie have been the owner since 1997 of one of the few remaining structures in Sonoma, CA, from the Mexican Period. Their home, the Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe on West Spain Street, dates from about 1842 and was constructed by Native American labor under the ownership of Captain Salvador Vallejo. It is the oldest structure in Sonoma that has continually been a residence since the time of its construction.

Mr. Demler retired as an International Banker in 2000 and then joined the U. S. Treasury’s Technical Assistance Program as a Banking Advisor to foreign governmental financial institutions and was posted to Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

There were subsequent postings to Pretoria, South Africa, Monrovia, Liberia, Washington, D.C., and, most recently, to Algiers, Algeria. Mr. Demler, who recently completed more than eleven years with the U.S. Treasury, is continuing his advisory work with foreign financial institutions on a private basis.

Mr. Demler received two Meritorious Honor Awards from U.S. Department of State – in 2005 for his advisory work at the Central Bank of Liberia and in 2009 for his advisory work at the (central) Bank of Algeria. In 2003 he received a Special Honor Award from the Deposit Insurance Agency of Bosnia-Herzegovina for his drafting the National Law and Regulations necessary for its establishment.

Twelve years of Mr. Demler’s 29 year commercial banking career were spent in England, Kenya and Nigeria. The balance of his commercial banking career was spent in the U.S.A. - in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California and in Miami, Florida.

Robert Demler is a graduate in History from the University of Texas and has had a lifelong interest in history and historic preservation. He is currently a Vice President with the California Heritage Council, a Board Member of the Sonoma League for Historic Preservation and a Board Member and the Treasurer of the Blue Wing Adobe Trust.

In January 2012, Mr. Demler founded the Spain Street History Project and its Website.
